Mauritius digital nomad visa

Requirements

• Minimum income of $1,500/month for a single applicant ($3,000 for a couple; +$500/month per child under 24)
• Remote work for an employer or clients based outside Mauritius
• Valid passport
• Travel or health insurance covering the duration of your stay
• No intention to work in the Mauritian labour market or do business with Mauritius residents

How to apply

1. Confirm your income meets the $1,500/month minimum (more for dependents)
2. Gather documents: passport, proof of remote income, travel/health insurance, travel plans
3. Apply online through the Mauritius Premium Visa portal — there's no application fee
4. Receive approval, often within about a week
5. Enter on the multi-entry Premium Visa, valid one year and renewable

Renewal and long-term stay

• Renewable: yes

One year, renewable, and unusually there is no published cap on how many times — holders describe renewing with substantially the same paperwork each time. Note what it is, though: Mauritius issues this as a premium *travel* visa rather than a residence permit, so it should not be assumed to accrue toward permanent residence. Mauritius has separate residence and occupation permit routes for that.

Tax

• Foreign income taxed locally: yes — taxed once you become tax resident
• Special nomad or expat tax regime: yes — see below

Mauritius does have a personal income tax, but it works on a remittance basis for foreign income: only what you actually bring into Mauritius is taxable there. In practice that produces a near-zero outcome for many Premium Visa holders — but it is an outcome you have to manage, not an automatic exemption, so how and when you remit money is the whole question.

This summarises published rules, not your situation, and it is not tax advice. Two things it can't tell you: your home country may tax you anyway — US citizens are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live — and day-count is only the most common trigger for tax residency, not the only one. Having a permanent home, a family or your centre of economic interests in a country can make you resident well before the day count does. Get advice before you move.
